Why I chose the Charlotte Mason philosophy
When I was doing research for what homeschool philosophy to follow, I actually wanted Montessori because I went to a Montessori pre-school that I loved. I wanted something similar for my children.
However, when I said I want Montessori, the arts, good books, and nature walks, I was directed to Miss Charlotte Mason.
At first I was turned off by Miss Mason because her philosophy was so religious. I wanted something secular, neutral. But as time went on, I realized that she made logical sense. No philosophy is neutral and it must be grounded in something.
So with that said, here are my five reasons why I choose to use the Charlotte Mason method.
1) Grounded in Biblical truth: The fact of the matter is that all truth comes from He who has created it. We do not create truth, God does. Therefore, all subjects must point to Him.
2) Formation of Character: Charlotte Mason said, "Children are born persons" with "the possibilities for good and for evil." I love how habit training and character character are part of the curriculum because it is part of the foundation for life as adults.
3) The Arts: The arts are an important component of education that has been sadly mostly removed from public schools. The arts encourage to love beauty, which also points to God.
4) Living Books: I fell in love with history reading living books and it is my desire that my children will love learning with living books.
5) Nature Study: I love that Charlotte Mason encourages us to see God's creation with our own eyes.
These are my reasons for using the Charlotte Mason method, if you follow her what are your reasons for using the method? If you don't, does this persuade you to use it?
