Book Recommendation: Sophie Scholl and the White Rose
In 2009, I traveled to Europe and learned about a courageous group of young adults in Germany who had printed flyers against the Third Reich.
I immediately went out of my way to learn more about them and discovered this book. This book is a great addition for high school students.
The book begins with the group meeting together and discussing how the war was eventually going to destroy Germany. They devise a plan to pass out pamphlets in the university of Munich.
The group includes brother and sister Sophie and Hans Scholl, Christopher Probst, Alexander Schmorell, and Willi Graf.
The book describes them being caught and the entire trial. It is suspenseful but is backed up by primary sources. So it’s not historical fiction. There is also a great movie in German about the event.
I’m posting this today because today is the 80th anniversary of the execution of Sophie and Hans Scholl. The leaders of the White Rose who demonstrated courage in the face of evil.
Have you heard of Sophie Scholl and the White Rose?
