What is “The Feast”?

We spread an abundant and delicate feast in the programmed, and each guest assimilates what he can
— Charlotte Mason, (Volume 6, p. 183).

Charlotte loved to compare education to a healthy meal with diverse foods. Nutritionists and functional medicine doctors emphasize the importance of eating diverse foods because it helps our microbiome and body to be healthier. Just like the body needs a variety of foods, so too does the brain need a variety of subjects to enjoy. For example, It is not good to only read non-fiction because it is in fiction that we can see the gray areas of life and understand them better. So, as mother-teachers, it is our duty to expose our children to various subjects.

In my schedule, I section off the academic block as “The Feast” but really, the feast includes all subjects.

“The Feast” includes the following:

* Bible: apologetics, logic, worldview
* The Arts: Hymn study, poetry recitation, picture study, music study, tales, Spanish, habits
* Language arts: copywork, dictation, grammar, composition, reading, literature, narration
* Math
* Academic block: History, Geography, Natural Science, Science, Singing, Play or Swedish Drill, Citizenship, Foreign Language, Latin
* Tea Time: drawing, read-aloud, nature study, handicrafts

All subjects are introduced at various times in their school career, and many are taught in a loop style.

The point of exposing our children to a variety of subjects is so they can have a well-rounded education with diverse points of view. This allows them to make stronger arguments for what is true, good, and beautiful.

What are your favorite subjects to teach? Are there any subjects you are enjoying to learn about?
