The Daily 5

Recently, I came up with the idea of the daily five. The daily five is a simple list of tasks outside of school the children are supposed to do on a daily basis. It includes the following:

1. Clean: This includes their daily chores like make the bed, clean up their room, fold and put away laundry, and clean up after dinner.

2. Create: Everyday my children are supposed to create something. This could be the daily handicraft, watercolor, baking/cooking, or anything else they come up with.

3. Play: Aside from daily walks, the kids need to go out and play together or with the neighborhood kids.

4. Practice: Although we still don’t have a piano teacher yet, typically I want them to practice for 20 minutes.

5. Read: The children need to read their Bible, a book either assigned to them by the curriculum and or their fun book of choice. They can read either a chapter a day or for 20 minutes.

These tasks are meant to cultivate responsibility and curiosity. Only when those tasks are completed are they able to watch TV or play video games on Sunday. Sometimes they become so entertained with one of the daily five that they forget about TV.

Whatever list you create, keep it simple so it’s easy to remember. My hope is that you steal this idea and modify it for your own family.
