Book Recommendation: Hints on Child-training by Henry Clay Trumbull
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I listen to the Elisabeth Elliot podcast for many reasons. One of the reasons I love her podcast is for her simple parenting tips. Although her podcast is more on teaching her listeners to trust and obey God, she will once in a while give a parenting tip.
In one of her episodes she recommending this book and said that it was her great-grandfather who wrote it! I immediately purchase and loved it.
It’s simple, readable, and doable. What’s funny is that his method goes hand-in-hand with Charlotte Mason!
The book includes a preface and 30 short chapters. In it he explains the difference between child teaching and child training. He discusses the difference between will-training and will-breaking. A difference that I didn’t know of and felt so relieved to learn.
This book is not only a book on child training but on parent training, which is something I have been searching for.
The biggest takeaway for me was that “God has foreordained that every man shall have the freedom of his will - and take the consequences.”
In other words, God doesn’t force us to make the right choices, he allows us to make bad choices and deal with the consequences. Therefore, we should not try and force or manipulate our children to make the right choice but give them the free will to make a bad choice. Knowing that but if knowledge felt like a weight was taken off my shoulders. I actually improved my parent since reading that.
It is for this reason that I highly recommend reading this book. I hope it trains you in parenting as it did me.
