Hymn Study
“The singing of hymns at home and of the hymns and canticles in church should be a special delight.”—Charlotte Mason
One area that I have not been doing well is hymn study. Sure we sing hymns daily but that is not exactly a study. The study includes reading about the author and what led him or her to write the hymn.
Also, some curriculums have hymn suggestions but they don’t include the music. I do believe learning how to read music is so important whether you can play an instrument or not.
It finally donged on me to use this precious hymnal: Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan for my hymn study. On the left hand side is the hymn and that includes the music score and on the right hand side is a small biography of the author.
What I decided to do is to get a hymnal for ever child in the family and work on a hymn on a weekly basis. We will study the background of the hymn on Monday and sing it every day of the week. You could sing a hymn per day, per week, or per month. It’s really up to you.
