Charlotte Mason Principle #6

"When we say that "education is an atmosphere," we do not mean that a child should be isolated in what may be called a 'child-environment' especially adapted and prepared, but that we should take into account the educational value of his natural home atmosphere, both as regards persons and things, and should let him live freely among his proper conditions. It stultifies a child to bring down his world to the child's level."

Typically when we think of a school atmosphere, we first think of the aesthetics. However, when Charlotte Mason is talking about "the atmosphere" she talking about more than the physical.

Today, I'm going to share with you three components of the Instrument of "Education is an Atmosphere".

1) Aesthetics: The school room should not be catered to a child. But rather the whole home should be an inviting place learn in a natural way. This means, one doesn't have to buy a toy sink, but rather let the child practice washing dishes in a real sink. Aesthetics also includes the cleanliness and order of the home, which brings me to point number two.

2) Temperament: Start by focusing your mind on God's word. Every day read a portion of scripture to help set the tone for the day. Remember that the Proverbs 31 woman, “Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come. Her mouth speaks wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue.” -- Proverbs 31:25-26 (CSB). In addition, teach your children the value of a clean home. A clean home calms the nerves of the children and the mother.

3) Ideas: The music that we play, the books that we read, the art that we observe, the shows that we watch all help form the atmosphere of the home. Beyond the home, includes church, friends, and extra curricular activities. All of these interactions play a vital role in the education of the child.

In conclusion, the atmosphere is more than the physical. It includes our temperament, ideas, and interactions. Children should feel loved and valued. All of these components are important for a child's development.
