Charlotte Mason Principle #5
Principle #5 is the introduction of a series of principles.
In principle number five, we see the three pillars of what it takes to have a well-rounded education so that we create life-long learners.
* Pillar #1 Education is an Atmosphere
This pillar is talking about the energy in the room more so than the aesthetics of the room. Although cleanliness and beautiful displays in the room add to the atmosphere, if the Mother-Teacher is regularly tense, it does not provide for a calm learning environment.
* Pillar #2 Education is a Discipline
This pillar is talking about the habits we cultivate as individuals and as a family. The habits we do is actually a part of our engrained character. Therefore it is important to teach our children and ourselves how to form good habits and break bad habits.
* Pillar #3 Education is a Life
This pillar is referring to ideas. Ideas come from God, and it is therefore important that we start with the foundation that all truth comes from God. Let's go back to the first principle that "children are born persons". Everyone has a gift, and as Mother-Teachers, we are to help the children discover their gifts and give them the time and tools to learn and flourish in it. We do this by giving them "a generous curriculum."
In the next couple of months, we will be going over each pillar more in depth.
